definitionLocalized cutaneous leshmaniasis is the most frequent form which commonly affects exposed areas of the body, such as the face and the extremities. Over 60% of affected children have single lesions but extensive ulcers and multiple lesions may also occur. At the site of parasite inoculation a discrete inflammation turns into a papule, a nodule or a plaque after an incubation period that ranges between 2 weeks and 12 months. This disease is caused by any of a number of species of protozoa in the genus LEISHMANIA. There are several major clinical types of this infection including cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. |
