Infestation of humans and their clothing by the body louse (Pediculus humanus) is confined almost exclusively to individuals that rarely remove their clothing and live in overcrowded, unhygienic situations. It is transmitted by bodily contact or by sharing infested clothing. Itching is the principal complaint, particularly at night. The body is often covered with excoriations, with resulting brownish hyperpigmentation in chronic infestation (so-called 'vagabonds'disease').
