Fleas exist universally among animals and human beings. Cat and dog flea infestation is more common in developed countries than infestation with the human flea, which occurs mainly in congested communities with low standard of hygiene. Flea bites usually provoke urticarial wheals or papules in a sensitized individual, often centred by a haemorrhagic punctum. Bullae may also develop. The lesions usually occur on the extremities and on areas where clothing fits tightly.
