Visible tortuous elongation and dilatation of the larger superficial veins. Primary varicosity may be due to an inherited weakness of the vein wall, a congenital absence of the valves, or arteriovenous fistulae. They develop after the age of 20. Secondary varicose veins are most commonly caused by the postthrombotic syndrome.
