Inflammatory systemic disease predominantly affecting the skin and skeletal musculature. Other organ systems may also be involved. The characteristic cutaneous rash is violaceous in colour and typically occurs on the eyelids, over the bridge of the nose, over the knuckles of the fingers and the knees. The forehead, neck, shoulders, sternum and arms may also be affected. Blue-red lichenoid papules may occur at the dorsa of the hands, over the knuckles and knees (Gottron`s sign). Calcinosis is usually a sequel of tissue damage. The skin symptoms are accompanied by muscle disease. Muscle weakness occurs initially in the proximal muscle groups. Either the skin or the musculature may be affected first.
